NEW MASTERS PROGRAM OVERWHELMED

Zanzibar, Chukwani (SUN): Over 50 prospective students for the SUMAIT University’s newly announced Master of Arts in Shariah and Islamic Jurisprudence have applied for the programme to take off April this year.
The University’s Centre for Research and Postgraduate Studies (CRPS) Director, Professor Yunis Abdille Musa said the response has been overwhelming and beyond the expected 25 students targeted for the initial enrolment.
“Even after the February 28 deadline, people kept on making calls asking if they could apply for the programme”, said Prof. Yunis adding that 80 per cent of the applicants were from Zanzibar.
According to Prof. Yunis, 60 per cent of the applicants finished their undergraduate studies from the local universities while 40 per cent undertook their studies in various overseas universities in Sudan, Yemen, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kenya.
He said in response to the overwhelming applications they had received, the programme would take off with 26 students in April this year while others would join in November 2020.
“Many applicants who submitted their applications physically expressed their happiness for the SUMAIT University to introduce the programme”, Prof. Yunis said, adding that the applicants were from public and private institutions and individuals.
Prof. Yunis said all was set for the programme to take off in April this year as schedule adding that the teaching staff was well equipped and the time table was ready.
Prof. Yunis thanked the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) for the efforts they had taken to thoroughly go through the programme proposal, their instructions to improve the proposal and finally approve it.
According to Professor Yunis, the programme which is the first of its kind not only to Sumait University but also to other Universities in Tanzania, will be conducted in course work and thesis.
SUMAIT University which is one of the top universities in Tanzania according to the UniRank ranking also conducts undergraduate programmes in Bachelor of Science with Education, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Arts with Education and Bachelor of Arts in Counselling Psychology.
