DR. KARUME BECOMES FIRST CHANCELLOR OF SUMAIT UNIVERSITY

Zanzibar, Chukwani, (SN): The Board of Trustees of the Kuwait based African Muslims Agency/Direct Aid has appointed former Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Amani Abedi Karume as first Chancellor of the Zanzibar based Abdulrahman Al-Sumait University.
Dr. Karume visited the University’s main campus of Chukwani recently to meet members of the academic staff where the Vice Chancellor, Professor Amran Rasli briefed the Chancellor on the University’s existing and future academic programmes, challenges and the way forward.
As the University’s Chancellor, Dr. Karume will confer Sumait University’s degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards during the traditional annual convocations, the task which has been performed by the University’s Council Chairman, Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Muhailan for the past 18 years.
Dr. Karume served as the first Chancellor of The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) (2000-2010) in his capacity as the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.
In 2008, Dr. Karume was awarded an honorary PhD degree in Laws by South Carolina State University in recognition to his inspirational success in educational development in Zanzibar. In 2009, he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in recognition to his contribution to health development in Zanzibar.
Dr. Karume also served as African Presidential Lecturer at the African Presidential Archives and Research Centre (APARC) at Boston University which describes him as an avid reader of politics, history, social studies and economics.
Sumait University which was built on the foundation of the former University College of Education Zanzibar (UCEZ) affiliated to the Sudan based International University of Africa (IUA) in 1998, is recognized by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) which approved it as a private University on 14th May 2014.
The University which consists of Faculties of Education, Sciences, Arts and Social Studies and Shariah and Islamic Studies offers degree, diploma and certificate programmes in the arts and sciences.
Besides financing Sumait University, African Muslims Agency/Direct Aid also runs Ummah University in Kenya, Musa Ben Baique University in Mozambique, Muslim University of Morogoro in Tanzania, SIMAD University in Somalia and South Sudan University in South Sudan.
