DR KARUME URGES SUMAIT UNIVERSITY TO GO GLOBAL

The First Chancellor of SUMAIT University, Dr. Amani Abeid Karume has urged the University to go global by exploring existing potentials of raising it to the international status.
Addressing the 19th SUMAIT University Graduation last Thursday, Dr. Karume observed that it was high time the University’s present traditional inclined education programmes were complemented with the introduction of new programmes
“I suggest that you make a critical self and honest assessment of your performance in the last five years as a full fledged university and come up with ways to explore the potential of raising SUMAIT University to the international status in the field of teaching and research to attain academic excellence”, Dr. Karume said.
The Chancellor, who also served as the Sixth President of Zanzibar between 2005 and 2015, urged SUMAIT University to look for strategic partners abroad to enhance its ability to compete with other universities.
“Also there should be close cooperation between SUMAIT University and educational players to strategize human capital to meet the isles needs”, said Dr. Karume who also served as the first Chancellor of the State University of Zanzibar.
He advised the University to get inputs and work closely to faculty deans, heads of departments, alumni, students and other stakeholders on how SUMAIT University could be elevated to a global institution of higher learning.
Dr. Karume suggested the establishment of reliable, feasible and sustainable ways to take care of educational needs for to help underprivileged students further their studies.
During the Graduation, Dr. Karume conferred awards to 354 graduates of whom 237 received degrees, 59 received ordinary diplomas while 58 received certificates in the Arts and Sciences.
