SUMAIT UNIVERSITY’S FOREIGN DON GETS KISWAHILI AWARD

Zanzibar, Chukwani, (SUN) – The SUMAIT University’s Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies, Dr. Fowzi Mohamed Barrow has received a Kiswahili Award for his active participation at the recently ended three-day Symposium on Kiswahili Literature and Linguistics held at SUMAIT University between August 3-5.
Dr. Barrow whose faculty comprises departments of Arabic, Linguistics and Social Studies, can speak Arabic, Somali, English and Kiswahili. He joined the University College of Education Zanzibar (UCEZ) in 2012 which in 2014 became a fully fledged Abdulrahman Al-Sumait Memorial University (SUMAIT University).
“I have benefited a lot from the symposium. I have expanded my knowledge and understanding of Kiswahili Culture”, said Dr. Barrow adding that it was a good opportunity for him to physically meet various authors who have been writing extensively on Kiswahili Literature and Linguistics.
Dr. Barrow holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Sudan based International University of Africa (IUA), Master’s degree in Arabic Language from the Khartoum Institute for Arabic Language (KIAL) in Sudan and a Bachelor’s degree in Arabic with Education from the IUA.
He was one of about 70 recipients of certificate awards at the symposium organized by the Chama cha Lugha na Fasihi ya Kiswahili Tanzania (CHALUFAKITA) which is responsible for the promotion of Kiswahili in collaboration with the Zanzibar Council for Kiswahili, Baraza la Kiswahili la Zanzibar (BAKIZA) and the SUMAIT University.
