
The Faculty of Arts and Social Studies
The Faculty of Arts and Social Studies is one of the largest Faculties at the SUMAIT University. It was established in 2014 to offer Bachelor of Arts (Ed.) degrees in Arabic language, Social Studies and Linguistics.
The main purpose of this Faculty is to contribute to society through the advancement of knowledge and learning in the Social Studies, and Languages with emphasis on advancement of knowledge through research and education. Also the Faculty is dedicated to developing individuals who possess ethical and professional attitudes and behavior. Within the Faculty, undergraduate students take core and elective courses of their interest.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Studies aims at producing qualified Linguistics and Social Studies teachers. Graduates of this Faculty will not work only as teachers but also as policy makers and administrators..

The Department of Social Studies is one of the oldest and most distinguished departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies which offers two disciplines of History and Geography. This Department offers a three year undergraduate program leading to Bachelor of Arts with Education, B.A (Ed) specializing in History and Geography with other subjects depending on the student choice
Teaching and Learning Activities
Beside the theoretical aspects the Faculty’s emphasis is on participatory methods in the learning process like discussions, questions and answers, seminar presentations and study tours. Students are also assigned topics for presentations on weekly basis.

The Department of Linguistics is one of the newest departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies which offers two disciplines of Kiswahili Language and English Language. This Department offers a three year undergraduate programme leading to a Bachelor of Arts with Education (B.A (Ed) degree specializing in Kiswahili and English Languages with other minor subjects depending on the student choice.
Teaching and Learning Activities
Participatory methods like discussions, questions and answers, seminar presentations. Students were also assigned topics for presentations during academic year.
Students Organizations
There are two student associations supervised by the Department of Linguistics. The first is the English Club and the second one is the Association of Swahili Language. Both organizations organize various activities in the department mostly public lectures, debates and seminars.

The Department initial mandate is to qualify as many Arabic language teachers as possible to meet the demands of the society. And it is commitment to provide students with the highest quality of education.
