Sumait University Library is as old as the former University College of Education Zanzibar (UCEZ) itself founded in 1998. At that time, the library was housed in a small lecture room with a collection of about 9,000 documents largely in Islamic and Arabic studies, 700 journals, periodicals and newspapers. In 2005, a new three-floor structure was built increasing the number of collections in the Sciences and the Arts.

The library is a member of COTUL to collaborate key information with other libraries in Tanzania. Besides, the library is connected with various databases such as research4life in which students can access subscribed materials through AGORA, HINARI, OARE and ARDI along with online open access databases at the same time.

Due to the wider demand of information, the SUMAIT University Library has purchased EMERALD and EBSCO databases to facilitate the availability of more information. Researchers can use such databases for references while students can access more information for their studies.

EBSCOhost is a powerful online reference system accessible via the Internet. It offers a variety of proprietary full text databases and popular databases from leading information providers. The comprehensive databases range from general reference collections to specially designed, subject-specific databases for public, academic, medical, corporate and school libraries.
