The University Council is the supreme governing body of SUMAIT. It provides strategic direction and institutional oversight to ensure the University fulfills its mission in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement. While academic matters are primarily the remit of the Senate, the Council safeguards good governance, financial stewardship and compliance with national laws and regulatory requirements.
- Strategy & Policy: Approves statutes, policies, strategic plans and major institutional priorities.
- Leadership & Governance: Appoints and evaluates the Vice Chancellor and senior officers; ensures effective governance structures and committees.
- Finance & Assets: Approves budgets and fees, monitors performance against plans, and oversees assets, capital projects and resource mobilization.
- Risk & Compliance: Ensures robust internal controls, audit and risk management, and compliance with national regulators (e.g., TCU/NACTE) and other legal frameworks.
- Quality Assurance: Receives reports from Senate; assures academic standards, integrity and continuous improvement across programmes and services.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Promotes ethical conduct, transparency and accountability, and fosters constructive relations with students, staff, alumni, partners and the community.
